Learning about hair loss will teach us about physical conditions that we never thought we would learn. A common type of hair loss comes shortly after a stress related trauma, a serious illness, major surgery or a serious infection. Hormones rule our bodies and when there is a sudden shift or increase of certain hormones one of the results is hair loss.
The hair falls out from different parts of the scalp while thinning on other parts not in a uniform manner, this type of hair loss is called Telogen effluvium.
Other type of hair loss could come after using strong medication or drugs. This would be a side effect of any drug especially some like Lithium, Beta blockers, Warfarin, Heparin, Amphetamines and Levodopa all these including chemotherapy can cause hair loss, which is what we mostly relate as side effect from this therapy.
There is also a type of hair loss that happens in a patchy manner. This is a result of a type of fungi that affects the scalp. It causes the hair to become thin and break off close to the scalp and the scalp also becomes flaky and scaly. This form of fungi is called Tinea capitis. From Harvard Health Publications
Common conditions also affect 3 to 5% of the population. This symptom is called Hypothyroidism it is common because a lot of us suffer from some type of hormonal imbalance. This condition is found more in women than men it develops when the body dies not produce enough thyroid hormone. It could also happen when the body does not produce enough thyroid hormone or becomes resistant to it. There are other symptoms that can develop but hair loss is the most visible besides weight gain.
Hair loss is common when there is a hormonal imbalance but there are also other symptoms with hair, most people find that there are changes in the texture of their hair it becomes dryer and grows slower over time. This condition can last for years before the person realizes where it begun.
Early diagnosis is the best way to combat hair loss. If there is more hair in your brush, in the sink or on your pillow, chances are that your body is going through a significant change. The best way to combat hair loss is to check with your doctor if you are under any medication to find out if hair loss is one of the side effects. If you are not taking any medication that causes hair loss, you could benefit from talking to a Endocrinologist and get a hormone count to see if your thyroids are producing enough hormones and if your body is not resistant to that hormone.
